LVAS is a member is Southern Alberta Victim Assistance Society (SAVA). SAVA is an organization which ensures that adequate training levels are met and maintained be victim assistance advocates in Southern Alberta.
We exist to act as "a first contact for victims of crime or acts of violence", explains Pat, one of our victim assistance advocates. " We can be a friend to accompany them to court or just a link to the services and help that is available to them." "Cut-backs in police staffing and social programs leave large gaps in services to those in need. We put a human touch back into a situation and help the individual regain control of their life and circumstance."
The greatest support to the victims comes from our ability to listen and offer comfort and reassurance.
RCMP officers of the Lethbridge Detachment comment;
"The early intervention they provide is crucial to helping these people (victims) resume normal lives."
"With fewer police officers doing more and more, the time to spend with a citizen in emotional distress is very limited."
Funding for LVAS is obtained from donations by concerned individual and businesses (Income-tax official deductible receipts are available).
The Lethbridge Community Foundation, a long-standing pillar of community support, generously provided the initial funds needed for the office equipment, cellular phones, office supplies and resource materials.
JRC Canada provided a significant contribution to our initial operating funds.
Alberta Justice, Victim Programs now supplies us with the majority of our operating budget via a Victims of Crime Fund Grant.
